Noi investiamo quando utilizziamo una o più risorse oggi allo scopo di ottenere un ricavo "sperato" in futuro. Quando studiamo la principale risorsa investita è il tempo. Quando invece acquistiamo una azione Apple Inc. la principale risorsa investita è il denaro. Il ricavo di un investimento è sempre sperato, questo perché nessuno può avere la certezza di come andrà un evento futuro. La mancanza di certezza nel futuro sta alla base del concetto di rischio, meno certezza ho su cosa accadrà in futuro e più alto è il rischio che qualcosa non andrà come sperato. Nella finanza un concetto chiave da non dimenticare mai è: più alto è il rischio e più alto è il guadagno o la perdita.
